The FeatureManager design tree is more than just a list of sketches, features, and components. It serves as the central hub that defines how your SOLIDWORKS model is built, organised, and maintained throughout the entire design process. A well-structured design tree not only makes your model easier to navigate but also helps preserve design intent and reduces the risk of rebuild errors.
In Part 1 of this series, we explored practical tools such as the Filter Bar, History Folder, and Sensors Folder, which help you work more efficiently by improving navigation, tracking your recent changes, and proactively monitoring key design parameters. In Part 2, we will build on these concepts and dive into tools that enhance clarity and collaboration within the design tree, including Dynamic Reference Visualization, Design Binder, and Markups.

- Visualise feature dependencies with Dynamic Reference Visualization
When working with complex models, understanding how features depend on each other is crucial. A single modification can trigger rebuild errors if you are unaware of how features are connected. This is where Dynamic Reference Visualization becomes invaluable. It allows you to instantly see the parent-child relationships between features directly within the design tree, helping you make changes confidently and avoid unexpected errors.
When Dynamic Reference Visualization is enabled, hovering over a feature in the design tree triggers a set of visual cues that map out its relationships. Blue arrows point to the feature’s parents, showing the features that other features depend on, while purple arrows indicate its children, highlighting the features that are built. This immediate visual feedback makes it easy to understand complex dependencies at a glance.
How to use it
- In the FeatureManager design tree, right-click the first item (part or assembly). In the context toolbar, click one or both of the following options:
– Dynamic Reference Visualization (Parent)
– Dynamic Reference Visualization (Child)

- Hover your cursor over a feature in the tree to view its dependency arrows. For example, Base Extrude and Boss Extrude 1 are parent features, while Boss Extrude 8 and Fillet 4 are child features. Deleting Boss Extrude 3 will also remove all of its dependent child features, so understanding these relationships is key to avoiding rebuild errors.

- Hover your cursor over a component in the tree to view its dependency arrows will show any mates relationships associated with that component.

- Store reference documents directly in your model with the Design Binder
Creating, storing, and re-using design documents can sometimes be a challenge. Important files, such as DFMEA documents, which capture design knowledge, considerations, and potential failure modes should always be made available alongside your SOLIDWORKS model. The Design Binder provides an easy way to accomplish this by allowing you to attach supporting documents directly within your design tree. You can store design revisions, analysis reports, specification sheets, and other relevant non-CAD data in one convenient location, ensuring that all essential design information travels with the model and is easily accessible for your team.
How to use it
- If the Design Binder folder is hidden, right-click the FeatureManager design tree and select Hide/Show Tree Items. Under Design Binder, select Show.

- Right-click the Design Binder folder and choose Add Attachment. You can then attach an existing file (such as a PDF or DOCX) or insert a new Design Journal note.

- The files under the Design Binder folder can be opened from within SOLIDWORKS by right-clicking on the file and select Open from the shortcut menu.

- Add feedback directly in SOLIDWORKS with Markups
Communicating design changes and review notes has never been easier. Instead of relying on printed drawings and hand-written notes, which can be lost or misinterpreted, Markups allow you to add comments, sketches, and annotations directly within your part, assembly, or drawing files. This keeps all feedback embedded alongside the model, ensuring that design intent and review information are preserved, easily accessible, and clear to everyone on the team. By using Markups, collaboration becomes more efficient, and the risk of miscommunication is significantly reduced.
How to use it
- If the Markup tab is not visible in your SOLIDWORKS interface, right-click on the CommandManager, then go to Tabs and select Markup to enable it.

- On the Markup tab, click Markup, then select Draw to sketch directly on the graphics area. You can also add Note to include text annotations. Each markup is automatically saved in the Markups Folder within the design tree.

- Once you have finished creating a markup, right-click on it in the Markups Folder. You can then export the markup in various formats, including PDF, JPG, BMP, TIF, and PNG, making it easy to share with team members who do not have SOLIDWORKS.

Using the FeatureManager design tree effectively gives you better control over your models and helps keep your workflow clear and organised. Dynamic Reference Visualization lets you see how features are connected and how changes affect other parts of your model. The Design Binder stores all your important documents with the model, and Markups let you add notes and feedback directly in the file. Together, these tools make it easier to stay organized, work efficiently, and collaborate smoothly with your team.
