When launching SOLIDWORKS, some users may encounter the warning message:

This warning indicates that SOLIDWORKS cannot generate its session log file — the journal file — which is essential for the Auto-Recover feature. This article explains what the journal file
does, identifies the common causes of this warning, and provides detailed solutions to resolve it effectively.
What is SOLIDWORKS Journal File?
The SOLIDWORKS journal file is a background log that records every action you perform during a working session. It is a key component for troubleshooting and recovery, allowing users to
retrieve unsaved work if the program unexpectedly closes.
When SOLIDWORKS fails to create this file, the Auto-Recover function is disabled, increasing the risk of data loss. Understanding how to fix this issue ensures smoother operation and protection of your design work
Common Causes and How to Resolve Them
- Another SOLIDWORKS Session Is Already Running
If SOLIDWORKS did not close properly or another instance remains active, the software cannot create a new journal file.Solution
• Open Task Manager.
• Under the Process tab highlight SOLIDWORKS and choose End task for each active session.
- Insufficient Permissions to the Journal Folder
If your Windows user account does not have write permissions for the journal folder,
SOLIDWORKS will be unable to create the file.
By default, the journal file is saved in the following directory:
C:\Users\[CurrentUser]\AppData\Roaming\SOLIDWORKS\SOLIDWORKS 20XX\Solution
• Navigate to the folder path mentioned earlier, then right-click the folder and select Properties.
• In the Security tab, choose your user account and verify that Full Control permissions are enabled.
If you do not have the necessary permissions, contact your IT administrator or adjust the settings accordingly.
- Invalid Journal File Folder Path in the Registry
If SOLIDWORKS is pointing to an incorrect or inaccessible folder (often due to user profile migration or network changes), it will fail to create the journal file.Solution (Advanced, Please seek for advice from IT or SEACAD Support Team)
• Close SOLIDWORKS completely
• Open the Windows Registry Editor (Win + R → type regedit).
• Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SOLIDWORKS\SOLIDWORKS 20XX\ExtReferences
• Locate the key named SolidWorks Journal Folders.
• Verify the folder path. If it is invalid, either:
